Spartina (densiflora; alterniflora; anglica; patens)

Spartina task force formed

At present there appears to be approximately 10 – 25 acres of this non-native cordgrass that has established colonies around the Harbor. A coalition of concerned citizens and regulatory agencies has formed to address the problem. The participants include the following individuals and organizations:

Washington Department of Agriculture
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Washington Department of Natural Resources
Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge
Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge
Grays Harbor Oysterman’s Association
Grays Harbor/Willapa Oystergrowers Association
Grays Harbor Audubon Society
FOGH (Friends of Grays Harbor)
Washington State Parks
The Nature Conservancy
Ocean Shores Interpretive Center
Grays Harbor Noxious Weed Board
Chehalis River Council

This summer two full-time individuals will be identifying and eradicating Spartina in the Grays Harbor Estuary thanks to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grant and foresight by the Legislature to provide money in the 2006 –2007 budget. The task force has determined that if we are able to treat the Spartina now, we can prevent it from becoming uncontrollable in the future.
